California Coast: Rocky Reefs

The California Coast exhibition, which opened in 2014 at the California Academy of Sciences, offers new insights and perspectives on the oceanic backyard of rocky underwater habitats, from kelp forests filled with leopard sharks to rocky reefs blanketed in vibrant and colorful corals. Its 2,000-gallon Sea Bank tank filled with brittle stars, painted greenlings, and rosy rockfish gives visitors a glimpse into the stunning biologically diverse communities that thrive along California’s coast in state and national marine sanctuaries. Interactive displays and graphics allow visitors to track the extraordinary migration pathways of sea turtles, sharks, and other long-distance travelers; while a Citizen Science game invites guests to experience tide pool research—and learn how to help protect California’s vibrant and vital coastal ecosystems.
